A HYPER-TEXT DATA SYSTEM “LABYRINTH”"

A hyper-text data system “LABYRINTH” represents a unique collection of data covering the state structures, political and social life in Russia and the others post-Soviet states. LABYRINTH’s uniqueness, as opposed to other politics information systems and databases, is in the fact that each and every LABYRINTH’s article is a polished author’s text, connected by links to all the other articles related to the subject in question. Hence, the user is given an opportunity to discover hidden and sometimes most unexpected connections between people and events. LABYRINTH uses the following information sources: official publications issued by the state bodies of the Russian Federation, publications in the media, official documents of the political parties and organizations, regional reference and encyclopedic publications, data published by the various public organizations. A significant amount of these data has been gathered by “Panorama” itself including more then 4 000 questionnaires distributed to the public opinion leaders and more than 1000 forms filled in with data on the political and public organizations. Labyrinth is equipped with “Yandex” search system, which enables You to find the necessary information quickly and efficiently. Due to regular up-dates, by the end of Febrary of 2005, LABYRINTH already comprised over 36214 articles (total volume approximately 222,2 Mbytes) of data, which are systematized as follows: State structures 1000 Political organizations 1247 Public organizations 70 Commercial organizations 1470 Scientific institutions and research centers 817 Biographies more than 22000 Russian Regions 1869 Chronology of events 3802 Former Republics of the USSR (Post-Soviet States) 3808 Other 1600 Furthermore, LABYRINTH information system comprises all the data for the past several years on federal, regional and local elections and regularly updates the section “Elections for the State Duma of the Russian Federation, 1999”. Accuracy, thoroughness and amplitude of information rendered in concise well-structured form make LABYRINTH indispensable for quite an extensive circle of users. Among the users of LABYRINTH, we can name the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation, State Duma of the RF, Russian Institute of Strategic Research under the Government of the RF, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the RF, Federal Agency for Government Communications and Information, Federal Security Service, Embassies and Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the United States and numerous European countries, TV-networks ORT, ViD, NTV, ATV and Russian’s major banks, insurance companies and consulting firms. LABYRINTH is updated on a monthly basis (or less frequently, depending on the choice of the user). The featured demo version itemizes all the articles of the information system LABYRINTH and the system’s inner structure. In order to allow for extensive familiarization with LABYRINTH, free access to a number of articles is available. All the links that are not underlined in black are accessible in the demo-version and make it possible for You to travel through LABYRINTH. Accordingly, “Russian Regions” are represented by Belgorod region, “Former republics of the USSR” – by Azerbaijan, “Political parties” – by four parliamentary parties (the presentation of the Agrarian Party is most complete), financial groups – by Gusinsky’s biography, “Most” Group and all the mass-media bodies connected to them. The “black links” are not accessible in the commercial version. The user’s interface of the demo version is slightly modified if compared to the commercial version with the purpose of rendering Internet browsing more convenient. LABYRINTH is available both on CD-ROM and with installation on the hard disk. Prerequisites for the users of LABYRINTH’s commercial version: IBM, processor P-90, RAM 16 Mbytes, free space on hard disk 120 Mbytes, 4x-CD-ROM, WIN 9x/NT or later versions. Recommended requisites: IBM, processor P-223MMX, RAM 32Mbytes, free space on hard disk 200 Mbytes, 24x-CD-ROM.
